A clear example of stereotyping as media bias appeared in Fox News’s handling of an AI-generated deepfake video during the recent Sora controversy. The headline, originally presenting a fabricated story, depicted a Black woman using exaggerated African American Vernacular English (AAVE) to rant about selling her government SNAP benefits. This AI-generated video reinforced the long-debunked “welfare queen” stereotype portraying Black women on public assistance as dishonest or criminal. Fox News published the story as factual, giving legitimacy to this racial stereotype. When the video was later exposed as fake, Fox quietly edited the article without a transparent retraction, allowing the stereotype to persist in public perception. This is an example of stereotyping bias combined with omission bias, as the media outlet failed to adequately correct the false narrative and thus amplified damaging racial caricatures.
