Media Bias Example: Biden’s Age Coverage

Type of bias – bias by repetition Bias by repetition happens when outlets repeat the same theme, phrase, or angle so often that it feels like the central or only fact about a story. The repetition itself shapes audience perception.

In 2024–25 coverage of President Joe Biden, many outlets hammered the same frame: Biden is too old and mentally unfit.

The New York Times ran a prominent piece warning of a “Biden Age Story” that Democrats could not avoid, repeatedly centering fear that he is “too old” to serve another term, as seen in its report on Democrats’ anxiety over his “age and acuity” in office.

On the other side, Fox News pushed a drumbeat of segments and articles about “Biden’s cognitive decline” and clips of “confused Biden moments,” turning every verbal stumble into proof of impairment.

The bias is not that age is mentioned once; it is that readers and viewers encounter this same storyline over and over, often crowding out coverage of policy, legislation, or economic data in the same period, which are available in more detailed form in places like the Congressional Budget Office and specialized policy outlets.
